Great Fun Was Had By All

In May 2024 South Brent Archive and BBC Radio Devon visited Ann twice at her home to talk about the evacuations of Slapton in 1944 for the DDay rehearsals. We were thrilled and delighted to share stories and enjoy a mutual love of local history. We spoke of Devon playwright Christian Mitchell and her 1944 play Red Earth, and thanks to Ann learnt of other plays that had been written by that same female writer. We were honoured to receive a copy of Ann's book which details the farms that were evacuated, and shall treasure it in our Archive. We always hoped to meet again, Ann said she had heritage information that was pertinent to South Brent, and we looked forward to hearing about that, sadly it was not to be. My enduring memory will be of Ann, twinkle in her eye, waving us off, having had such a lovely afternoon. Though our meetings were but 2 short afternoons, Ann's warmth, humour, humility and wisdom will stay with me. She was an inspiration and I will miss her and feel sad I shall not be seeing her again.
